Laapataa Ladies is the kind of film that restores your faith in Indian cinema's ability to be both entertaining and meaningful. Kiran Rao's comeback feature — her first since the brilliant Dhobi Ghat — is a warm, witty, and deeply human comedy about two young brides who accidentally swap places on a train.

The film's genius lies in its simplicity. There are no grand gestures, no dramatic revelations — just two women discovering who they are when the roles they were expected to play are suddenly unavailable. Nitanshi Goel and Pratibha Ranta are wonderful as the two leads, bringing warmth and specificity to roles that could easily have become archetypes.

Rao's direction is assured and generous — she trusts her audience to find the humor and the pathos without being told where to look. It is a film that feels effortless, which is the hardest thing to achieve.
